OBJECTIVE: To establish the dynamic treatment strategy of Chinese medicine (CM) for metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) by machine learning algorithm, in order to provide a reference for the selection of CM treatment strategies for mCRC. METHODS: From the outpatient cases of mCRC in the Department of Oncology at Xiyuan Hospital, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, 197 cases that met the inclusion criteria were screened. According to different CM intervention strategies, the patients were divided into 3 groups: CM treatment alone, equal emphasis on Chinese and Western medicine treatment (CM combined with local treatment of tumors, oral chemotherapy, or targeted drugs), and CM assisted Western medicine treatment (CM combined with intravenous regimen of Western medicine). The survival time of patients undergoing CM intervention was taken as the final evaluation index. Factors affecting the choice of CM intervention scheme were screened as decision variables. The dynamic CM intervention and treatment strategy for mCRC was explored based on the cost-sensitive classification learning algorithm for survival (CSCLSurv). Patients' survival was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method, and the survival time of patients who received the model-recommended treatment plan were compared with those who received actual treatment plan. RESULTS: Using the survival time of patients undergoing CM intervention as the evaluation index, a dynamic CM intervention therapy strategy for mCRC was established based on CSCLSurv. Different CM intervention strategies for mCRC can be selected according to dynamic decision variables, such as gender, age, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group score, tumor site, metastatic site, genotyping, and the stage of Western medicine treatment at the patient's first visit. The median survival time of patients who received the model-recommended treatment plan was 35 months, while those who receive the actual treatment plan was 26.0 months (P=0.06). CONCLUSIONS: The dynamic treatment strategy of CM, based on CSCLSurv for mCRC, plays a certain role in providing clinical hints in CM. It can be further improved in future prospective studies with larger sample sizes.

Lithium (Li) metal stands as a promising anode in advancing high-energy-density batteries. However, intrinsic issues associated with metallic Li, especially the dendritic growth, have hindered its practical application. Herein, we focus on molecular combined structural design to develop dendrite-free anodes. Specifically, using hydrogen-substituted graphdiyne (HGDY) aerogel hosts, we successfully fabricated a promising Li composite anode (Li@HGDY). The HGDY aerogel's lithiophilic nature and hierarchical pores drive molten Li infusion and reduce local current density within the three-dimensional HGDY host. The unique molecular structure of HGDY provides favorable bulk pathways for lithium-ion transport. By simultaneous regulation of electron and ion transport within the HGDY host, uniform lithium stripping/platting is fulfilled. Li@HGDY symmetric cells exhibit a low overpotential and stable cycling. The Li@HGDY||lithium iron phosphate full cell retained 98.1% capacity after 170 cycles at 0.4 C. This study sheds new light on designing high-capacity and long-lasting lithium metal anodes.

Brick kiln co-treatment is a novel industrial hazardous wastes (IHWs) utilization process. However, the effects of chlorine (Cl) in wastes on heavy metals (HMs) during this process are overlooked. This study investigated the stabilization/solidification (S/S) and volatilization, as well as long and short-term leaching, of HMs in Cl-containing bricks. The results indicated enhanced formations of stable mineral phases (NiFe2O4, Ni2SiO4, Cd3Al2Si3O12, CdSiO3, FeCr2O4, Cr2O3, CuFe2O4, and CuAl2O4) in bricks at a low sintering temperature (800 °C) due to the affinity between Cl and HMs. By comparing HM concentrations before and after sintering in bricks, the study observed that Cl's presence significantly elevated the volatilization rates for Cd and Cu by 30.8% and 14.2%, respectively. In contrast, the effect on volatilization for Ni and Cr was not significant. Additionally, utilizing the NEN 7375 method, the cumulative leaching rates of Ni, Cd, Cr, and Cu over a 64-day experiment under extremely acidic conditions were 0.22%, 7.18%, 0.01%, and 1.46%, respectively. Similarly, higher short-term leaching rates of Cd (4.03%) and Cu (5.73%) than those of Ni (0.94%) and Cr (0.08%) were observed. This finding might be attributed to the lower stability of the Cd and Cu solid phases under acidic environments compared to those of Ni and Cr. Surface wash-off, dissolution, and diffusion were the processes governing HM leaching from bricks. The 10-year projections revealed a minimal release of HMs during future extended leaching, implying the successful S/S of HMs. This study provides a reference for assessing the environmental impacts of brick kiln co-processing of Cl-containing IHWs.

OBJECTIVE: To identify metabolites and metabolic pathways affected in dogs with struvite and calcium oxalate urolithiasis compared to healthy dogs. To explore the candidate urinary biomarkers to distinguish dogs with struvite and calcium oxalate urolithiasis. ANIMALS: 13 dogs with calcium oxalate urolithiasis, 7 dogs with struvite urolithiasis, and 13 healthy dogs were recruited between September 2021 and January 2023. METHODS: Metabolomic profiles were analyzed from urine samples using UPLC-MS MS. According to the variable importance in the projection (> 1) and correlation coefficient (P < .05) obtained by orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis, the differential metabolites were screened. The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes database was used to identify the metabolic pathways involved. RESULTS: Compared to healthy dogs, those with calcium oxalate urolithiasis exhibited distinct metabolites primarily associated with phenylalanine metabolism, nicotinic acid, and nicotinamide metabolic pathways. Conversely, dogs with struvite urolithiasis demonstrated variations in metabolites mainly linked to tryptophan metabolism and glycerophospholipid metabolic pathways. Between calcium oxalate and struvite groups, pyocyanin, glycylprolylarginine, traumatin, cysteinyl-leucine, and 8-hydroxydodecylcarnitine are candidate urinary biomarkers. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Our findings provide an in-depth analysis of metabolic perturbations associated with calcium oxalate and struvite urolithiasis in dogs. We also identified candidate urinary biomarkers distinguishing between dogs with calcium oxalate and struvite urolithiasis, which can be subsequently validated to assist in stone diagnosis and guide treatment choices.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness of Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) combined with adjuvant chemotherapy on myelosuppression for colorectal cancer (CRC) patients using network meta-analysis (NMA). METHODS: Literature searches in both international (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library) and Chinese (China Science and Technology Journal Database, Wanfang Data, China National Knowledge Infrastructure) databases for relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were conducted from inception until October 10, 2022. We included RCTs of patients who received CHM combined with chemotherapy, including FOLFOX, XELOX, FOLFIRI, and other relevant regimens in the CHM treatment group. The outcomes included the incidence of myelosuppression, leukopenia, hemoglobin reduction, and thrombocytopenia. Two reviewers independently screened the databases, extracted the data, and assessed the risk of bias and credibility of evidence. RevMan 5.4.1 software and STATA 14.0 were used to perform the NMA. RESULTS: A total of 31 RCTs were included, published from 2008 to 2021 in Chinese. Among these, 2,314 participants comparing the following 9 CHMs were identified: Shengbai Recipe (SBR), Bazhen Decoction (BZD), Jianpi Jiedu Recipe (JJR), Jianpi Recipe (JR), Compound Cantharis Capsule (CCC), Zaofan Pill (ZFP), Guilu Erxian Gel (GL), Buzhong Tiaogan Decoction (BZ), and Qiamagu Capsule (QM). The results of NMA found an indirect comparison. Based on the surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA), the ZFP+ chemotherapy group had the lowest incidence of myelosuppression, with an odds ratio (OR) of 0.08 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.01, 0.76], whereas the GL+ chemotherapy group had the lowest incidence of leukopenia, hemoglobin reduction, and thrombocytopenia, with an OR of 5.25 (95% CI: 2.41, 11.43), 4.66 (95% CI: 2.23, 9.72), and 0.27 (95% CI: 0.13, 0.54), respectively. Moreover, BZD + chemotherapy could alleviate leukopenia, hemoglobin reduction, and thrombocytopenia (P<0.01). Pairwise comparison showed that there was no difference in the efficacy among the 8 CHMs+ chemotherapy group. The comparison and adjustment funnel plot indicated that small-study effect had no impact on these outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: This NMA provided evidence to support that patients with CRC benefit from receiving different combination of CHM chemotherapies. Among these, GL plus chemotherapy and BZD plus chemotherapy were the more effective for myelosuppression in patients; however, as the qualtiy of evidence is insufficient, further research is needed. Many biological processes related to cell function and fate begin with chromatin alterations, and many factors associated with the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are actually downstream events of chromatin alterations, such as genome changes, neoantigen production, and immune checkpoint expression. However, the influence of genes as chromatin regulators on the efficacy of ICIs remains elusive, especially in gastric cancer (GC). In this study, thirty out of 1593 genes regulating chromatin associated with a favorable prognosis were selected for GC. CHAF1A, a well-defined oncogene, was identified as the highest linkage hub gene. High CHAF1A expression were associated with microsatellite instability (MSI), high tumor mutation burden (TMB), high tumor neoantigen burden (TNB), high expressions of PD-L1 and immune effector genes, and live infiltration of immune cells. High CHAF1A expression indicated a favorable response and prognosis in immunotherapy of several cohorts, which was independent of MSI, TMB, TNB, PD-L1 expression, immune phenotype and transcriptome scoring, and improved patient selection based on these classic biomarkers. In vivo, CHAF1A knockdown alone inhibited tumor growth but it impaired the effect of an anti-PD-1 antibody by increasing the relative tumor proliferation rate and decreasing the survival benefit, potentially through the activation of TGF-ß signaling. In conclusion, CHAF1A may be a novel biomarker for improving patient selection in immunotherapy.

Formaldehyde, a ubiquitous indoor air pollutant, plays a significant role in various biological processes, posing both environmental and health challenges. This comprehensive review delves into the latest advancements in electrochemical methods for detecting formaldehyde, a compound of growing concern due to its widespread use and potential health hazards. This review underscores the inherent advantages of electrochemical techniques, such as high sensitivity, selectivity, and capability for real-time analysis, making them highly effective for formaldehyde monitoring. We explore the fundamental principles, mechanisms, and diverse methodologies employed in electrochemical formaldehyde detection, highlighting the role of innovative sensing materials and electrodes. Special attention is given to recent developments in nanotechnology and sensor design, which significantly enhance the sensitivity and selectivity of these detection systems. Moreover, this review identifies current challenges and discusses future research directions. Our aim is to encourage ongoing research and innovation in this field, ultimately leading to the development of advanced, practical solutions for formaldehyde detection in various environmental and biological contexts.

Hyperspectral change detection, which provides abundant information on land cover changes in the Earth's surface, has become one of the most crucial tasks in remote sensing. Recently, deep-learning-based change detection methods have shown remarkable performance, but the acquirement of labeled data is extremely expensive and time-consuming. It is intuitive to learn changes from the scene with sufficient labeled data and adapting them into an unlabeled new scene. However, the nonnegligible domain shift between different scenes leads to inevitable performance degradation. In this article, a cycle-refined multidecision joint alignment network (CMJAN) is proposed for unsupervised domain adaptive hyperspectral change detection, which realizes progressive alignment of the data distributions between the source and target domains with cycle-refined high-confidence labeled samples. There are two key characteristics: 1) progressively mitigate the distribution discrepancy to learn domain-invariant difference feature representation and 2) update the high-confidence training samples of the target domain in a cycle manner. The benefit is that the domain shift between the source and target domains is progressively alleviated to promote change detection performance on the target domain in an unsupervised manner. Experimental results on different datasets demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve better performance than the state-of-the-art change detection methods.

Secondary aluminum ash (SAD) disposal is challenging, particularly in developing countries, and presents severe eco-environmental risks. This paper presents the treatment techniques, mechanisms, and effects of SAD at the current technical-economic level based on aluminum ash's resource utilization and environmental properties. Five recovery techniques were summarized based on aluminum's recoverability in SAD. Four traditional utilization methods were outlined as per the utilization of alumina in SAD. Three new utilization methods of SAD were summarized based on the removability (or convertibility) of aluminum nitride in SAD. The R-U-R (recoverability, utilizability, and removability) theory of SAD was formed based on several studies that helped identify the fingerprint of SAD. Furthermore, the utilization strategies of SAD, which supported the recycling of aluminum ash, were proposed. To form a perfect fingerprint database and develop various relevant techniques, future research must focus on an extensive examination of the characteristics of aluminum ash. This research will be advantageous for addressing the resource and environmental challenges of aluminum ash.

BACKGROUND: Novel biomarkers are required in gastric cancer (GC) treated by immunotherapy. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection induces an immune-active tumor microenvironment, while its association with immunotherapy response is still controversial. Genes underlying EBV infection may determine the response heterogeneity of EBV + GC. Thus, we screened hub genes associated with EBV infection to predict the response to immunotherapy in GC. METHODS: Prognostic hub genes associated with EBV infection were screened using multi-omic data of GC. EBV + GC cells were established and confirmed by EBV-encoded small RNA in situ hybridization (EBER-ISH). Immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining of the hub genes was conducted in GC samples with EBER-ISH assay. Infiltrating immune cells were stained using immunofluorescence. RESULTS: CHAF1A was identified as a hub gene in EBV + GC, and its expression was an independent predictor of overall survival (OS). EBV infection up-regulated CHAF1A expression which also predicted EBV infection well. CHAF1A expression also predicted microsatellite instability (MSI) and a high tumor mutation burden (TMB). The combined score (CS) of CHAF1A expression with MSI or TMB further improved prognostic stratification. CHAF1A IHC score positively correlated with the infiltration of NK cells and macrophages M1. CHAF1A expression alone could predict the immunotherapy response, but its CS with EBV infection, MSI, TMB, or PD-L1 expression showed better effects and improved response stratification based on current biomarkers. CONCLUSIONS: CHAF1A could be a novel biomarker for immunotherapy of GC, with the potential to improve the efficacy of existing biomarkers.

OBJECTIVES: To identify the risk indicators and develop and validate a nomogram prediction model of implant apical non-coverage by comprehensively analyzing clinical and radiographic factors in bone-added transcrestal sinus floor elevation (TSFE). MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 260 implants in 195 patients receiving bone-added TSFE were included in the study. The population was divided into a development (180 implants) and a validation (80 implants) cohort. According to 6 months post-surgery radiographic images, implants were categorized as "apical non-coverage" or "apical covered." The association of risk factors including clinical and radiographic parameters with implant apical non-coverage was assessed using regression analyses. A nomogram prediction model was developed, and its validation and discriminatory ability were analyzed. RESULTS: The nomogram predicting bone-added TSFE's simultaneously placed implant's apex non-coverage after 6 months. This study revealed that sinus angle, endo-sinus bone gain, implant protrusion length, graft contact walls, and distal angle were predictors of implant apical non-coverage. The generated nomogram showed a strong predictive capability (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.845), confirmed by internal validation using 10-fold cross-validation (Median AUC of 0.870) and temporal validation (AUC = 0.854). The calibration curve and decision curve analysis demonstrated good performance and high net benefit of the nomogram, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The clinical implementation of the present nomogram is suitable for predicting the apex non-coverage of implants placed simultaneously with bone-added TSFE after 6 months.

Landslide susceptibility assessment is considered the first step in landslide risk assessment, but current studies mostly rely on GIS platforms or other software for data preprocessing. The modeling process is relatively complicated and multi-models cannot be integrated. With regard to this issue, this study develops a Python system for automatic assessment of regional landslide susceptibility. The Python system implements landslide susceptibility assessment through three modules: geographic data processing, machine learning modeling and result evaluation analysis. For geographic data processing, ten landslide influencing factors can be used to construct an evaluation factor dataset and reclassify the thematic maps based on the frequency ratio method. Four built-in machine learning models (logistic regression (LR), multi-layer perceptron (MLP), support vector machine (SVM) and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost)) are integrated into the system to complete susceptibility modeling and calculation. Additionally, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves can be automatically generated to evaluate the accuracy. The system was then applied into Lantian County in Shaanxi Province as a demonstration example. The results show that the areas under the ROC curve (AUC) of the four models are 0.838 (LR)、0.882 (SVM)、0.809 (MLP) and 0.812 (XGBoost), respectively, indicating that the SVM model was the most suitable model for landslide susceptibility assessment in Lantian County in the Loess Plateau of China. The system has now been made open source on Github, which can effectively improve the efficiency of regional landslide susceptibility assessment, especially provide tools for data processing and modeling for non-professionals.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and feasibility of utilizing Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) combined group psychotherapy intervention on psychological distress management and gut micro-biome regulation for colorectal (CRC) survivors. METHODS: A single-arm phase I clinical trial was conducted between December 2020 and December 2021 in Xiyuan Hospital and Beijing Cancer Hospital in China. Inclusion criteria included stage I-III CRC survivors after radical surgery with age between 18 and 75. The intervention was a 6-week online TCM combined group psychotherapy intervention including 90-min communication, TCM lifestyle coaching, self-acupressure guidance, and mindfulness practice led by TCM oncologist and psychiatrist each week. Outcomes were measured by Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS), Fear of Cancer Recurrence Inventor (FCRI), and Quality of Life Questionnaire (QLQ-C30). Fecal samples before and after intervention were collected for 16Sr RNA analysis. RESULTS: We recruited 40 CRC survivors and 38 of them finally completed all interventions with average age of 58±13 years' old. Paired t-test showed that SAS at week 2(35.4±5.8), week 4 (37.9±10.5) and week 6 (31.3±6.4) during the intervention was significantly lower than baseline (42.1±8.3, p<0.05 respectively). SDS score also declined substantially from baseline (38.8±10.7) to week 2 (28.3±8.8, p<0.001) and week 6 (25.4±7.7, p<0.001). FCRI decreased from 19.4±7.2 at baseline to 17.5±7.1 at week 4 (p=0.038) and 16.3±5.8 at week 6 (p=0.008). Although changes of QLQ-C30 were not statistically prominent, symptom burden of insomnia and fatigue significantly alleviated. The abundances of gut microbiota Intestinibacter, Terrisporobacter, Coprobacter, and Gordonibacter were all significantly elevated after intervention. CONCLUSIONS: TCM combined group psychotherapy intervention is feasible and effective to reduce CRC survivors' psychological distress and modulate certain gut bacteria which might be associated with brain-gut axis effect. It is necessary to carry out with phase II randomized controlled clinical trial.

Background: Aberrant metabolism is a major hallmark of cancers and hereditary diseases. Genes associated with inborn metabolic errors may also play roles in cancer development. This study evaluated the overall impact of these genes on gastric cancer (GC). Methods: In total, 162 genes involved in 203 hereditary metabolic diseases were identified in the Human Phenotype Ontology database. Clinical and multi-omic data were acquired from the GC cohort of the Affiliated Hospital of Jiangsu University and other published cohorts. A 4-gene and 32-gene signature was established for diagnosis and prognosis or therapeutic prediction, respectively, and corresponding abnormal metabolism scores (AMscores) were calculated. Results: The diagnostic AMscore showed high sensitivity (0.88-1.00) and specificity (0.89-1.00) to distinguish between GC and paired normal tissues, with area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) ranging from 0.911 to 1.000 in four GC cohorts. The prognostic or predictive AMscore was an independent predictor of overall survival (OS) in five GC cohorts and a predictor of the OS and disease-free survival benefit of postoperative chemotherapy or chemoradiotherapy in one GC cohort with such data. The AMscore adversely impacts immune biomarkers, including tumor mutation burden, tumor neoantigen burden, microsatellite instability, programmed death-ligand 1 protein expression, tumor microenvironment score, T cell receptor clonality, and immune cell infiltration detected by multiplex immunofluorescence staining. The AUC of the AMscore for predicting immunotherapy response ranging from 0.780 to 0.964 in four cohorts involving GC, urothelial cancer, melanoma, and lung cancer. The objective response rates in the low and high AMscore subgroups were 78.6% and 3.2%, 40.4% and 7%, 52.6% and 0%, and 72.7% and 0%, respectively (all p<0.001). In cohorts with survival data, a high AMscore was hazardous for OS or progression-free survival, with hazard ratios ranged from 5.79 to 108.59 (all p<0.001). Importantly, the AMscore significantly improved the prediction of current immune biomarkers for both response and survival, thus redefining the advantaged and disadvantaged immunotherapy populations. Conclusions: Signatures based on genes associated with hereditary metabolic diseases and their corresponding scores could be used to guide the diagnosis and treatment of GC. Therefore, further validation is required.

BACKGROUND: Low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) is a series of bowel dysfunction symptoms, including altered bowel frequency, irregular bowel rhythms, fecal incontinence, and constipation. LARS occurs in 80% of patients undergoing sphincter-preserving surgery, affecting patients' quality of life along with social avoidance. Different measurements and treatments have been raised to deal with LARS, but no systematic standard has been developed. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: To promote the standardization of clinical trials and clinical management of LARS, this review summarizes the latest findings up until 2023 regarding the diagnostic criteria, assessment protocols, and treatment modalities for postoperative LARS in rectal cancer. RESULTS: The diagnostic criteria for LARS need to be updated to the definition proposed by the LARS International Collaborative Group, replacing the current application of the LARS score. In both clinical trials and clinical treatment, the severity of LARS should be assessed using at least one symptom assessment questionnaire, the LARS score or MSKCC BFI, and at least one scale related to quality of life. Anorectal manometry, fecoflowmetry, endoscopic ultrasonography, and pelvic floor muscle strength testing are recommended to be adopted only in clinical trials. After analysis of the latest literature on LARS treatment, a stepwise classification model is established for the standardized clinical management of LARS. Patients with minor LARS can start with first-line treatment, including management of self-behavior with an emphasis on diet modification and medication. Lamosetron, colesevelam hydrochloride, and loperamide are common antidiarrheal agents. Second-line management indicates multi-mode pelvic floor rehabilitation and transanal irrigation. Patients with major LARS should select single or several treatments in second-line management. Refractory LARS can choose antegrade enema, neuromodulation, or colostomy. CONCLUSIONS: In clinical trials of LARS treatment between 2020 and 2022, the eligibility criteria and evaluation system have been variable. Therefore, it is urgent to create a standard for the diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of LARS. Failure to set placebos and differentiate subgroups are limitations of many current LARS studies. Randomized controlled trials comparing diverse therapies and long-term outcomes are absent, as well. Moreover, a new scale needs to be developed to incorporate the patient's perspective and facilitate outpatient follow-up. Though the establishment of a stepwise classification model for LARS treatment here is indispensable, the refinement of the guidelines may be improved by more standardized studies.

Hyperspectral (HS) pansharpening aims at fusing an observed HS image with a panchromatic (PAN) image, to produce an image with the high spectral resolution of the former and the high spatial resolution of the latter. Most of the existing convolutional neural networks (CNNs)-based pansharpening methods reconstruct the desired high-resolution image from the encoded low-resolution (LR) representation. However, the encoded LR representation captures semantic information of the image and is inadequate in reconstructing fine details. How to effectively extract high-resolution and LR representations for high-resolution image reconstruction is the main objective of this article. In this article, we propose a feature pyramid fusion network (FPFNet) for pansharpening, which permits the network to extract multiresolution representations from PAN and HS images in two branches. The PAN branch starts from the high-resolution stream that maintains the spatial resolution of the PAN image and gradually adds LR streams in parallel. The structure of the HS branch remains highly consistent with that of the PAN branch, but starts with the LR stream and gradually adds high-resolution streams. The representations with corresponding resolutions of PAN and HS branches are fused and gradually upsampled in a coarse to fine manner to reconstruct the high-resolution HS image. Experimental results on three datasets demonstrate the significant superiority of the proposed FPFNet over the state-of-the-art methods in terms of both qualitative and quantitative comparisons.

Steelmaking contributes 8% to the total CO2 emissions globally, primarily due to coal-based iron ore reduction. Clean hydrogen-based ironmaking has variable performance because the dominant gas-solid reduction mechanism is set by the defects and pores inside the mm- to nm-sized oxide particles that change significantly as the reaction progresses. While these governing dynamics are essential to establish continuous flow of iron and its ores through reactors, the direct link between agglomeration and chemistry is still contested due to missing measurements. In this work, we directly measure the connection between chemistry and agglomeration in the smallest iron oxides relevant to magnetite ores. Using synthesized spherical 10-nm magnetite particles reacting in H2, we resolve the formation and consumption of wüstite (Fe1-xO)-the step most commonly attributed to whiskering. Using X-ray diffraction, we resolve crystallographic anisotropy in the rate of the initial reaction. Complementary imaging demonstrated how the particles self-assemble, subsequently react, and grow into elongated "whisker" structures. Our insights into how morphologically uniform iron oxide particles react and agglomerate in H2 reduction enable future size-dependent models to effectively describe the multiscale aspects of iron ore reduction.

Solid waste produced by the nonferrous smelting industry has a significant number of notable differences. The lack of recognition of solid waste characteristics is the main factor restricting its disposal and utilization. In this study, we analyzed the main production processes of the nonferrous smelting industry; identified the key production nodes of solid waste; and clarified the characteristics, including the physical, chemical, and pollution characteristics of solid wastes, through a large sample statistical analysis. We found similarities among solid wastes from a common generation source as well as notable differences among the different generation sources: slags and sludges from waste acid treatment and wastewater treatment units had a water content of 27.43-52.71% and 51.14-68.27%, respectively, which were significantly higher than those of other metallurgy and dust collection units; the pH of slags from an electrorefining unit was strongly alkaline; the mineral phase of sludges from wastewater treatment was only calcite; slags from a waste acid treatment unit were mainly in phase of gypsum, claudetite, and anglesite; the chemical composition of slags from pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy units was mainly SiO2 and Fe2O3. In this paper, we discuss a new classification method based on a common generation source for the first time. These results are beneficial to guide the disposal, utilization, and management of solid waste.

BACKGROUND: UTX (encoded by KDM6A), a histone demethylase for H3K27me2/3, is frequently mutated in human cancers. However, its functional and regulatory mechanisms in colorectal cancer (CRC) remain unclear. METHODS: Immunohistochemistry staining was used to investigate the clinical relevance of UTX in CRC. Additionally, we generated a spontaneous mouse CRC model with conditional Utx knockout to explore the role of UTX in the colorectal tumorigenesis. Post-translational regulation of UTX was determined by co-immunoprecipitation and immunoblot analyses. RESULTS: Herein, we identify that downregulation of UTX, mediated by the Cullin 4B-DNA Damage Binding Protein-1-Constitutive Photomorphogenesis Protein 1 (CUL4B-DDB1-COP1) complex, promotes CRC progression. Utx deletion in intestinal epithelial cells enhanced the susceptibility to tumorigenesis in AOM/DSS-induced spontaneous mouse CRC model. However, this effect is primarily alleviated by GSK126, an inhibitor of histone methyltransferase EZH2. Mechanistically, EMP1 and AUTS2 are identified as putative UTX target genes mediating UTX functions in limiting intestinal tumorigenesis. Notably, the CUL4B-DDB1-COP1 complex is identified as the functional E3 ligase responsible for targeting UTX for degradation in CRC cells. Thus, Cop1 deficiency in mouse intestinal tissue results in UTX accumulation and restricts tumorigenesis. Furthermore, patient cohort analysis reveals that UTX expression is negatively correlated with clinical stage, favorable disease outcomes, and COP1 expression. CONCLUSIONS: In the current study, the tumor suppressor function and regulation of UTX in CRC provide a molecular basis and the rationale to target EZH2 in UTX-deficient CRC.
